The first European Hemiptera Congress took place in Amaliapolis, a small seaside resort, not very far from Volos, Greece, from 6 till 13 of September 1998. It was the follow-up of the triennial International Congresses concerning the Rhynchota Fauna of Balkan and Adjacent Regions that had been held since 1983 in Greece and Slovenia. The Congress was attended by 27 scientists from ten European countries (Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Yugoslavia). The papers presented focused mainly on faunistics and biogeography of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe more generally, as well as on the taxonomy and phylogeny of Psyllids, Cicadina and Heteroptera. Abstracts have not been published. Several field trips were made in the vicinity as well as to Mt. Pelion, Meteora and Lake Plastiras, while there was also a boat trip to the island of Skiathos and a short boat trip under the full moon. The photo attached shows from the left to the right Matija Gogala, Pavel Lauterer, Vera d’Urso, Tatjana Smirnova, Alexander Emeljanov, Manfred Asche and Ljiljana Protić near Lake Plastiras.
